The best advice I can give someone who has a depressed friend or family member, is to be there for them. If they tell you they don't want to talk, talk to them anyway. find out what is going on. Let them know that they are loved and cared about. Remind them that while it may seem dismal now, the future is right around the corner, and things in this life can change in the blink of an eye.
If your friend has been depressed for a few weeks, and doesn't know why, you may need to get a doctor or psychiatrist invovled. As someone who has suffered through and still experiences bouts of depression occassionally, getting help can make all the dofference in the world. They have drugs and behavioral techniques that can help.The doctor will decide if you need medication. Antidepressants are not to be given to people under 25, because of the risk for increased suicidal thoughts. It has something to do with the brain, and how it is still developing at this age. There are many options when it comes to dealing with depression and the symptoms it causes. This is a very serious illness, and if it just won't go away, it needs to be addressed quickly.
