Are dachshunds good with children?

Dachshunds are one of a kind

Although many experts will tell you that Dachshunds are not good with children, in my personal life, I have never had a problem with mine, and I have four children. I believe it all comes down to a few key questions:

  1. Will I be able to spend time with the dog to train it not to jump up, or bite?
  2. Will the dog I am getting be a puppy, that will have time to get used to being around children?
  3. What temperament does the dog have? Does it seem overly nervous or jumpy?

Dogs are a lot like people, they have their own personality and temperament. Of course, you don't want to have a dog that will be aggressive or not able to train.

Remember to never leave small children alone with a dog, no matter how well you think you know him.

Dachshunds can be very lovable, and at times hyper, and I have yet to train mine to use the outside, not the inside, as a toilet. If you do get a Dachshund, the best way to toilet train one is using a crate. You put them in the crate, and let them outside to use the bathroom. They won't use it in the crate, because they don't want to get their home soiled. They will use it, however, if you forget to let them out to use the bathroom.

Dachshunds are also very curious, as mine was when she was a puppy. She decided to say hi to a Copperhead. The poor thing almost didn't make it, but the vet was able to get her all better. She still has the scar where the snake bit her. I hope she doesn't decide to try and play with another one in the future!

Thankyou for the informative hub. I have 2 dachshunds, Toby ( he's actually a black & tan like the one above) and Sammy, she's a brown & white miniature piebald. The reason I requested this hub is because I will have my baby boy in November and I wasn't quite sure if dachshunds got along with children. Of course, I am not going to trust these two troublemakers alone with the baby. Thanks for the information though it really helped. By the way, crate training them is so true. They really did learn fast. :)

Congratulations on the new baby! My Dachshund Sasha is a real troublemaker too. She gets into everything. It is actually harder to watch her than a baby sometimes. Something that I have discovered with my dog is that she tries to love on my three year old, and then gets hyper and jumps up on her. I have yet to stop the jumping habit. Other than that, she is pretty good most of the time.
